There is wide spread misconception regarding the terms “water resistant” and “waterproof” as they relate to replica watches. Let us Replica Watch Store begin with a definition of these two terms.
Water resistant: A “water resistant” replica watch can handle light moisture, such as a rainstorm or splashes from a sink, but it should not be completely submerged in water.
Waterproof: “Waterproof” is the supposed capability of a replica watch to completely prevent any possibility of water entering into any working portion of the mechanism. The United States Federal Trade Commission, states that “no watch is 100 percent waterproof”. In fact watches sold in the United States can only be referred to as “water resistant” and use of the term “waterproof” was discontinued in the late 1960’s. Some other countries do however retain use of the term hence many Swiss made watches for example are advertised as “waterproof”. This is not to say that some watches cannot sustain use under water however the depth to which a watch can be taken and still resist water entering varies greatly. For example a watch that has no depth indicated on it should be considered water resistant while watches that have a stated depth, such as 35 meters may be safe for normal swimming etc.
There are, however, factors that do affect even those watches with a stated depth. One of these factors is the crown mechanism. In order for a crown mechanism to avoid being a point of entry for water it must be screwed down completely. Failure to insure this is the most common reason for water entering a watch. Seals on watches can also play a part in water entering the mechanism. Watch seals must be in good condition and can be affected by age, chemicals and other factors that contribute to their deterioration.
Watches are also affected by sudden changes in water pressure and temperature. One example of this is the sudden change in temperature when going from a hot tub to a pool. The sudden drop in temperature can result in watch seals contracting rapidly allowing water to seep in. Further, high water temperatures such as those found in hot tubs and saunas can lead to seal damage.
Water pressure changes such as that of a swimmer on the surface plunging his arm into the water can also lead to water leakage. The sudden and repeated action can result in a static pressure level that exceeds the level that the watch is rated for.
It is safe to conclude given the above information that no watch is truly waterproof. In fact many major manufacturers of watches decline to use this term and will not warranty their product as waterproof.
Our Replica Watch Store Signature Series replica watches are tested, when new, to 35 meters, however our manufacturer does not warranty against water damage. If you would like further information on this subject we suggest that you use your favorite search engine for the terms “water resistant” and “waterproof”.
