Used Rolex watches have been great investments over the years. The Rolex Submariner watch has been a great investment. In truth the very first Submariners were nothing more than the 6202 Turn-o-graph with a different dial and crown. Early Submariners (models 6204 and 6205) introduced in 1953/54 have almost nothing in common with the current Submariners and appear almost dainty to the eyes attuned to watches such as Panerai and the current Sea Dweller.
Despite the acclaim that greeted these new watches they were not on sale for very long. In 1956, the 6205 was replaced with not one but two models. The 6536 used a similar case to earlier models but was approximately 10% bigger in all dimensions.
Like its predecessors, it was waterproof to 100m and used the newly introduced 1030 movement. The other new model, the 6200, retained the bubbleback style movement of the previous models, but had a much deeper and stronger case and was waterproof to 200m. A very big increase in depth and pressure.
The 6200 was produced for just a year before being replaced by an almost identical watch now also powered by the 1030. This was the 6538, which became famous when seen on the wrist of Sean Connery in the first James Bond Film “Dr No” in 1962. Collectors subsequently named it the James Bond Submariner.
It is impossible to discuss the older Submariners without referring to their collectability
The 6200 and 6538 are the most desirable because they are both waterproofed to 200m and are both easily identified by their large winding crown (which looks identical to the current Triplock crown apart from the word brevet in place of the 2 dots seen on the current crown) they also fit into today’s aesthetic, which values a watches toughness more than its rarity.
In 1967/8 Rolex replaced the 1030 movement with the 1530. One of the first watches to receive this new movement was a replacement for the 6536: the 5508. Again, the new model was an externally identical to its predecessor. But after a short lifespan, the 6538 was replaced by the 5510 again an identical looking watch but powered by the 153
The 5510 was removed from the catalogue after only 2 years. And the watch that replaced it was one of the most iconic of all Submariners the 5512.
It continued the Rolex tradition of gradual development, the only real change being the case, it now featured shoulders protecting the crown. It is not known if divers had asked for them but the watches utility was undeniable, as the crown/case joint is the weakest part of the case and the shoulders protect the crown in the event of a diver knocking the watch against a hard obstacle which happens very frequently.
The 5512 was fitted with a 1520 chronometer movement although the first years production did not mention this fact on the dial.
However only 18 months after the 5512 was launched, Rolex brought out an almost identical non-chronometer version the 5513. To distinguish between the two, the phrase Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified was printed on the dials of all subsequent 5512 Submariners.
The 5513 Submariner was produced from 1962 to 1990. While it is the most common variant and so the most affordable it gave birth to two of the rarest and most valuable Submariners, the royal navy 5513/5517 and the Comex 5513/5514. These were specialist variants to the basic 5513 each designed to meet the different requirements of the two clients.
In 1967 a new model was introduced at the top of the Submariner range, the 1680 date. This was the first model to feature the now iconic Rolex feature; a date displayed under a Cyclops lens. For the first few years this model also had the word Submariner on the dial printed in red.
This meant that there were now 3 Submariner models, which would soon become 4 as the helium escape valve watch made the transition from specialist to mainstream model when the 1665 Submariner 2000 Sea Dweller was launched, and like the 1680 the first models had the red text on the dial.
In 1972, the 5512 Submariner ceased production and would not be replaced: eight years later the Submariner Date and the Sea- Dweller were replaced and the changes by Rolex standards were quite radical, The models included new cases, new movements and sapphire glass. As the watches were stronger, so there depth rating was increased.
A further four years on and Rolex changed the dial to the style it uses today, a high gloss black dial with luminous indices bordered inside white-gold settings.
This remained the same until in 2003, to celebrate the 50 th anniversary of the Submariner, Rolex launched the a new model the 16610LV ( LV stands for Lunette Vert, or Green Bezel) which featured a green bezel and “maxidial” with oversized markers and minute hands that give better underwater visibility. Which shows that despite its popularity, Rolex still regards it as a tool watch.
While most owners never subject one to nothing more strenuous than a swimming pool, the fact remains that no Comex diver anywhere in the world is allowed to dive without a Submariner or Sea Dweller strapped to their wrist.
With all the differnet styles and designs, used Rolex Submariner watches provide a challenging and niche oriented collectors market
